What If - 25 Years - 5

PART 5

Weeks Later

Janine made it to London in time to see Gigi get her bronze medal. After everything finally died down, and she felt more like herself, she cooked a big dinner and called the kids over. After they ate, Jiselle's husband, Lucky's wife and their kids went to the other room while Janine sat with her 4 to talk with the twins. AJ and Gigi were just present just because. "Your father left something for you at the hospital before he went on tour," Janine slid them the envelope, still containing the trip to Spain that she didn't plan on using. "Have you two decided what you want to do?"

Jiselle picked it up before lucky, and hunched her shoulders until she pulled out a smaller envelope that said her name and handed lucky his. As soon as Elle saw what was inside, her jaw dropped. Lucky saw her reaction and opened his. It was a folded letter and a check for 5 million dollars, "holy shit..." He spat out.

Janine chuckled, "boy, you act like you're not used to cash. He calls it investment money. And he wants to spend time with you two overseas."

"That's not the point, mom... That nigga don't know us and gon give us this much money... I don't know about it... " Jiselle rolled her eyes.

"Is today your black day, pumpkin?" Smiling, Janine put her hand on top of Jiselle’s and squeezed a bit, "I guess he feels like he has nothing else to give you since you're adults."

Lucky laughed, "you're a trip ma. I guess that makes sense."

"I'll hang out with him" Elle said.

"Read the letters. I'm sure he left contact info for you in it because i don't have it."

They both nodded, "so, you ain't gonna start seeing him again, are you mom?"

She laughed, "no. I want a regular guy with a regular job and no kids."

"Just asking."

"Mmhmm ... Don't worry about what i'm doing," she smiled, "do what you will with the money and give him a call."

Lucky nodded, "Elle will."

"Yea, I'll call," Jiselle smacked Lucky on the arm, "Lucky can't hide his disdain from anyone. I can be rude in a nicer way."

"Give him a chance," Janine urged, "you two turned out great but nothing can replace a father. Better late than never."

"True, but... Never mind, I'll do it tomorrow." Jiselle told her, then looked back down at the check.

Janine looked at her, “what’s wrong?”

“Nothing, Mommy,” she sighed, “is he really a nice person after all he did to you … To us?”

“Time changed a lot about him for the better. Listen, babies … If you don’t want to deal with him, you don’t have to. It’s the beauty of being grown ass people. That decision is yours. I don’t want to push for it. Do what’s best for you.”

“I just feel like we should know our real father.”

“Then do it. Ask him all the questions you’ve ever wanted. I’m sure he’ll answer them. Don’t hold back. Let him know what you expect now even if it’s nothing at all.”

Jiselle nodded, “ok, Mommy.” She looked to Lucky, “what do you think?”

He hunched his shoulders, “I don’t care either way. I’m too grown to be mad at the dude anymore but I aint initiating shit.”

“Stuff … Not shit,” Janine eyed him, “make your own individual decisions,” she said more to Jiselle than Lucky, knowing she would follow his lead.

“Ok,” Jiselle nodded once more while Lucky gave his mother an apologetic smile.

Days Later

“Maddox … Its Jiselle.” She’d taken the time to dial the number which was hard as hell to do. “If you don’t have time to talk, I can call back another time.”

“This is actually his assistant to his assistant, Ron. Who’d you say it was again?”

“Jiselle Hines. If he’s busy, it’s fine,” she rolled her eyes, not at all surprised, and damn sure annoyed, she had to go through an assistant to talk to the man.

A quick shuffle was heard, “it’s a Jiselle Hines,” he spoke to Maddox who’d just come from the stage for a break.

Right after, there was a break in convo and Maddox took the line, “Jiselle, how are you doing, sweetheart?” He was beyond excited to talk to her.

“Fine. Is it a bad time? I can call back. I don’t even know what part of the world you’re in. It could be 3am,” she nervously rambled.

He smiled, “you are so much like your mother. Don’t worry about it. I’ll always make time for you even if its just a few. I’m so happy you called …”

Jiselle found herself smiling and already getting something she’d missed. “So! Dad …”

Laughing, “when can we see each other? It’s completely up to you. No rush. Just let me know. I can do a weekend! Could I bring the baby? She’s half Cuban.”

“Well, I’d love it if you guys would come see me when I’m in Italy. I have a house and you have a lot of family there. In like 2 weeks … Does that work?”

“That’s great! Uhm …” She sighed, “I’m not sure about my brother. Do you think you could call him? He doesn’t want to initiate. I can give you his number.”

“Yea, no problem.” He requested without words, “what is it, baby?”

Jiselle gave him the number. “Next time I call, do I have to go through the assistant?”

“I was rehearsing, which is the only reason you had to, otherwise, I have my phone on hand … Sorry about that.”

“Oh. Sorry! Well … I’ll see you in 2 weeks.”

“No problem. I’ll call you with your flight details as soon as possible. Take care.”

“Bye dad,” she giggled and hung up, then immediately called Lucky.

“Yo,” He answered.

“I just talked to dad. He’s gonna call you so PLEASE be nice,” she begged.

“Who said I wasn’t going to be?”

“You know you can be very black sometimes,” she joked.

He rolled his eyes, “what is he-” then an incoming call came in, “hold on Elle, it’s a private number,” he clicked over, “this is Addison Hines.” He spoke professionally.

“Hey Addison, its Maddox, how are you, man?” Maddox asked with a smile.

“I’m good. How are you and the tour?”

“Good, just rehearsing … Hey I’m gonna be touring in Italy in two weeks and I’d love for you to come out with your sister and son. I’m sad about the missed time and would love a chance to get to know you and your son.”

“In 2 weeks?” He paused and immediately sent an email to his secretary to cancel anything he had set for that time, “it’ll work. We’ll come.”

“Perfect, I will give you a call as soon as I get your flight information.”

“Alright, take care, man.”

“You too,” Maddox hung up.

Lucky clicked over where Elle was still holding. She almost squealed, “isn’t he the nicest guy ever?”

He laughed, “shut up. He’s alright.”

“Yay! I can’t wait to call mom!”

“Get off my phone then,” he smirked.

“K. Bye.”

Suit & Tie

See ... I've complained about not supporing JT anymore simply because I felt like he threw his black fans away when he decided he didn't want to make music anymore ... Then turn around do movies we don't want to see, lol ... So I figured 'Oh, he's getting with Timb and Jay so he can get his black fans back' and then assumed this would sound exactly like FutureSex/LoveSounds but I was wrong ... And it pains me to say that I love this freaking song. Damn you, Timberlake ... Damn you. Now get rid of you wife, get a black woman, and absolutely all will be forgiven.

This is some Maddox type mess aint it, though? *nods* Yep ...

What If - 25 Years Later - 4

Days Later

"Good news ..." Antonio began has he walked into her hospital room. He was about to keep going but noticed the breathing tube coming out of her mouth and eyes shut. It's how they make you look 'comfortable' before you die. He lingered around the doorway for a while watching her, then noticed the TV was on NBC. She must have been waiting to see Genevieve run in the Olympics. He went and turned the TV up a little more, then went to her bedside and covered her arms. Janine always complained about white people and how they're always hot when Black people are freezing to death. With that thought, he smirked, then took a seat in the chair next to her bed just to sit and watch TV as if she were awake and watching with him.

Antonio sat the entire day and was readying himself to spend the night. Why? Guilt. Once the Olympics went off for the night, he was forced to wonder if his son was right. Was he the reason his best friend was dying? The negligence, affairs, name-calling, and appalling behavior that he'd stressed her with, not to mention that children she'd reared almost alone, was something he would need to pay for one day and this was it. Regret. Regret at it's finest. As Antonio was about to lean back in his chair to attempt sleep, the doctor walked in, "tests came back clean ... We can schedule the transplant for tomorrow."

Relief washed over Antonio but not enough. The organs have to take. He only nodded, "my thanks to you. You will be compensated adequately."

The doctor smiled. The money Antonio was giving him to essentially wake the dead, was enough to retire him. "Goodnight Mr. Bovin."

He nodded, "Doctor," then closed his eyes.

10 Days Later

Antonio came through for the first time in years. He delivered a compatible set of lungs that Janine was immediately transplanted with once necessary tests were run. After the initial surgery, she was placed in a coma with breathing tube and monitored in ICU for a few days before they found that her body was accepting. Out of her coma and breathing on her own, she was about to sneak out of her bed to go to the window, but got back in when she heard the door. Turning to the door, she smiled, "you're back."

Maddox walked into her room with an envelope, "hi..." he smirked.

"You have amazing timing ... Or you're nosey." Janine sat herself up.

"Surprised?"

Nodding, "actually yes." She waited until he walked in further, "I have 2 huge scars on my back."

"In pain?" He looked down at her and hugged her.

"I feel dead but slowly coming back around. It's essentially what happened after the coma so I shouldn't be surprised." She rubbed his back.

"Gotcha, yea i had to make sure i checked on you before my tour." He sat in a chair and placed an envelope he was holding on her lap.

She looked at the envelope and started to open it. "Please tell me they're front row tickets for my baby."

"Not yet, this is for you and the twins. I know they don't need me, but I need them. I would love to be a part of their lives."

"What is this? A letter?"

"Its investment money for them and an all expenses paid trip for you and 2 of your girlfriends to Spain ..."

"Thank you. I'll give it to them." She looked at the stuff, put it back in the envelope and on the stand next to get bed, "how long is the tour for?"

"Well this portion is for two months then I break for a week them off to south America."

Nodding, "traveling sounds fun. I may do a bit after my recovery ... See if I can bribe any of my kids into going with me."

He smiled, "I told Sasha I found you here."

"You're ex wife?" She took a deep breath, "the lifestyle of a superstar didn't work for her?"

"Nope. She hated it and cheated because I wasn’t home."

"I can't say i would go that route but i doubt i could handle that either. My husband never being home ... Been through that already ... I know how bad it is."

"yes, but she was foul and i always offered to fly her to where i was."

"Well i'm sorry ... For the divorce and abortion." She grinned, "I've seen a little you running around and it's funny."

"Oh yea? How so? Tell me about it.

"Big mouths on both of them. Lucky wasn’t concerned with looking good but Elle was. Lucky did, however, like to flaunt everything he had. Lucky was given his first pack of condoms as a gift, from me, when he was 13. He was embarrassed. I wanted him to be safe. Jiselle, at an early age, was a smart ass but the sweetest thing in the world. Whenever one of them got in trouble, they both went down trying to cover for the other ... They are fiercely protective of each other, even as adults." She paused, "and when they were babies ... God ..." Laughing, she pointed to a black photo album, "you can take that. Has pictures in it from babies up until college graduation."

"I would love that..."

"It's yours. You can take it when you get ready to go. So tell me what the world looks like right now," shaking her head, "I've been here for months and can't wait to get out. Wait, is your father still evil?"

"He’s still an asshole. He'll never change ... What have the twins said about me?"

"Absolutely nothing. Like you never showed up," she sighed, "to me at least. They've talked with AJ, though. They like that they look like you but don't know if getting to know you, at their age, is important."

"Man, if love to fly them out to Europe to hang out a little bit."

"I'll talk to them after we get back from London."

"you're going too London? For what? Just curious."

"Yes. In 2 days. Just in time to see Gigi run. 400 meters. They haven't even started the heats for the races yet so I'm in luck."

"Nice..." He paused, "I'm so proud of you. You did good."

She smiled, "thank you. I appreciate it. I should thank you also. Lucky is a hedge fund manager. I know he got that from you. Antonio's graduation present to him was hooking him up with his own business. He had a probationary period to see how he would handle it but things have been going well. It's grown quite a bit the last 2 years. Jiselle gets her talent from you. I was a dancer and the baby can't dance so," she laughed, "she plays piano for the New York Philharmonic and teaches classical piano at NYU. She definitely didn't get that from me," she smiled again.

"That's damn good to know, i have my own club chain as well, you know?"

She nodded, "I've been to the one in LA. During my affair-turned-boyfriend." Nodding again, "we went and it was really nice."

"you have a boyfriend now? Where's he been?"

"He's my ex now. Has been for the past year. We dated the last 2 years of my marriage and 3 after."

"Oh wow cheating on the ball and chain? Not like you Janine."

"True. I lasted longer than I expected considering all I dealt with during my marriage. It was ... Terrible. Really terrible," she paused, "Antonio was ... " Janine stopped again, searching for the correct choice of word, "horrible to me. But I tried to fix it. I tried when he wouldn't or didn't want to."

"How ironic..." He sighed, "Sorry that happened, and for everything I put you through. You're fantastic and i look forward to a friendship with you and the twins." He kissed her forehead and them looked at his watch. "I have to be going," he said a little sad.

"Stay safe. And it was good to see you."

"i will take care you..." He winked at her, waved and smiled as he walked out.
